How AI is transforming medical imaging diagnostics
The healthcare sector is rapidly embracing AI, particularly in medical imaging diagnostics. A recent study projects the global healthcare AI market will reach $120 billion by 20301, driven by the growing demand for faster, more accurate diagnostics and improved patient outcomes.
Both Micron Technology and Axelera® AI share a strong commitment to caring for the health and wellbeing of everyone. Micron’s memory solutions are designed to support life-enhancing technologies, while Axelera’s mission includes empowering industries — especially healthcare — with AI tools that improve lives and support medical professionals in their daily work.
What is AI in medical imaging?
AI tasks such as image segmentation, pattern recognition and predictive modeling are revolutionizing the analysis of X-rays, CT scans and MRIs. These tools empower medical professionals to detect disease earlier and more precisely, enabling preventive care and reducing diagnostic uncertainty.
The social impact of these technologies can be significant: faster diagnoses, fewer repeat procedures and better patient outcomes. By combining the acceleration of Axelera AI with high-performance memory from Micron, healthcare providers gain access to powerful, scalable tools that can enhance diagnostic accuracy, reduce operational inefficiencies and improve the overall quality of care.
Challenges in medical imaging
Medical imaging has traditionally relied on expert interpretation, often constrained by generalized studies and statistical patterns. This makes it difficult to tailor diagnoses to individual patients. AI in healthcare addresses this by acting as a supportive tool, enhancing doctors’ capabilities without replacing their clinical judgment. AI assists in diagnostics and improves efficiency, but final decisions remain firmly in the hands of healthcare professionals.
Operational challenges, such as high costs, limited resources and long patient wait times, also persist. However, AI-powered imaging systems can reduce repeat scans, improve diagnostic accuracy and streamline workflows, all of which contribute to better care delivery and more efficient use of healthcare infrastructure.
Healthcare data now accounted for about 30% of the world’s data volume, which was projected to reach 36% by 20252. To manage this explosion of data, modern imaging systems require real-time data capture, high fidelity and robust compute and memory capabilities. This is where the synergy between Axelera AI’s accelerators and Micron’s memory solutions becomes essential: enabling powerful, efficient and scalable AI inference directly at the edge in medical equipment.
Together, these technologies support the development of smarter diagnostic systems that not only process data faster but also help clinicians make more informed decisions, ultimately improving patient care.
Medical AI acceleration
Axelera AI, based in the Netherlands, has developed a custom ASIC AI inference chipset, the Metis® AIPU, designed to accelerate neural network computations for real-time AI inference. It delivers up to 214 tera operations per second (TOPS) for low-precision integer operations (INT8) with an impressive 15 TOPS per watt power efficiency, supporting up to 3,200 frames per second (fps) on ResNet-50.
Each Metis AIPU is paired with Micron’s 32Gb LPDDR4 memory, running at 4.2 Gbps bandwidth, forming a high-performance, low-power solution well-suited for complex medical imaging tasks that require both speed and accuracy.
In a typical deployment, the system includes an industrial PC with Axelera’s PCIe add-in card, powered by four Metis AIPUs and four Micron LPDDR4 components. This configuration achieves up to 856 TOPS and supports 12,800 fps (ResNet-50) or 38,884 fps (MobileNet V2-1.0), delivering unmatched inference acceleration for edge-based medical imaging.
This level of performance enables efficient and reliable handling of even the most demanding AI workloads in healthcare, such as real-time anomaly detection and multi-modal image fusion.
Advancing AI medical imaging
The integration of AI in medical imaging is transforming healthcare by enabling earlier, more accurate diagnoses and improving patient care. Axelera AI and Micron are at the forefront of this transformation, delivering solutions that combine cutting-edge compute with high-performance memory.
Their combined platform, Axelera’s Metis AIPU and Micron’s LPDDR4 memory, offers a powerful, scalable and energy-efficient foundation for AI-driven diagnostics. This technology enhances the capabilities of medical tools, enabling real-time analysis and helping healthcare professionals deliver better outcomes.
Beyond technical performance, the social impact is clear: improved diagnostic accuracy, reduced operational burdens, enhanced patient care and disease prevention. These innovations contribute to better health and wellbeing for society, helping healthcare systems become more proactive, responsive and patient-centered.
Together, Axelera and Micron are not just advancing technology, they are enabling a new era of intelligent, compassionate healthcare.
